You can rent a car and drive there if you like, but you can also take advantage of a plethora of public transportation available for you. There are many ways that you can get into the rest of New York City to enjoy whatever you came to see. There are electric vehicle charging stations as well. There are also restricted mobility areas located to make limited mobility passengers able to get to the terminals easily. Metered parking is available at one of the terminals. There are both short term and long term parking areas, all with easy access to the terminals. The Thanks Again program allows frequent flyer miles to be accumulated through parking as well. There are also programs that make payment ahead of time possible so that passengers can get to their planes much more quickly. Parking at LaGuardia airport is very safe and secure, with great rates. Eventually, the overcrowding problems slowed down to a much more manageable level, though. The airport experienced many overcrowding problems all the way through the turn of the century. The airport became subject to a perimeter rule in the mid-1980s that prevented flights of over 1,500 miles. In 1953 it finally took on the current name, LaGuardia Airport. The Port of New York Authority took over the airport in 1947. Kennedy International Airport, was started. International travel halted when Idlewild airport, which would later be the John F. Upon its completion in 1939, it took on the name New York Municipal Airport-LaGuardia. The airport was rebuilt in Queens starting in 1937. Shortly after this, it became known as North Beach Airport. The site of the airport was originally an amusement park, but was made into a private flying field in 1929. ![]() This airport is the domestic hub for Delta Airlines. LaGuardia Airport is located right on the edge of Queens in northern New York City. It sees over 24 million passengers a year, making it a smaller airport of the system, but it is still a very significant airport because it is the busiest airport in the United States, handling strictly domestic traffic. New York LaGuardia Airport, abbreviated LGA, is part of the largest airport system in the United States run by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
